Mercruiser 5.0 2003 Wellcraft Coastal 22 - At 2200 to 2800 rpm motor revs up and down. Carb rebuilt.Fuel OK.?

Motor idles well. Then, as the boat is run up on plane, the engine runs smoothly until about 2200 rpm. The engine then begins reving up and down to nearly stall and then back up to 2200. Gradually opening up throttle has no effect until throttle is opened full wide open. Once WOT, the boat comes up on plane and will run fine between 2900 and 3200. Engine only has difficulties running between 2200 and 2800 rpm. Fuel is clean and Carb was rebuilt. Ran fine for say 8 hrs after carb was rebuilt but then went back to the reving up and down. A friend suggested changing the distributor shaft. Can anyone comment or suggest how to troubleshoot?Mercruiser 5.0 2003 Wellcraft Coastal 22 - At 2200 to 2800 rpm motor revs up and down. I get the feeling this might be an ignition timing issue. Start by having the ICM and knock control module (if equipped) tested.Mercruiser 5.0 2003 Wellcraft Coastal 22 - At 2200 to 2800 rpm motor revs up and down. Carb rebuilt.Fuel OK.?
Take the fuel fill cap lose and try running again might have a plugged fuel vent%26gt; Sounds like a fuel starvation%26gt; You didn't say what carb you have%26gt; But it should have a power valve and was it replaced??While run close the choke a little and see if that clears up the surging%26gt; If a Quaderojet the metering rods might be out of adjustment%26gt;
